最新作「アバター」が全世界で大ヒット中のジェームズ・キャメロン監督が、広島と長崎への原爆投下を題材にしたノンフィクションの映画化権を獲得したことが明らかになった。

同書は、被爆者と米軍パイロットへの綿密な取材をもとに、広島と長崎に原爆が投下されたあとの2日間を科学的なアプローチで再構築したノンフィクション。なかでも、1月4日に93歳で亡くなった、広島と長崎の両方で被爆した二重被爆者の山口彊（つとむ）さんの体験が作品の重要な部分を占めているという。
実は、「アバター」のプロモーションで昨年12月に来日したキャメロン監督は、ペレグリーノ氏とともに長崎の病院に入院中だった山口さんを訪問していた。その際山口さんから、自分の体験と核廃絶のメッセージを世界中の人々に伝えてほしいという願いを託されたそうで、そのことは欧米の映画サイトでも広く報じられた。

まだ映画化権を買っただけであるから実現するかどうかは不透明だが、一抹の不安が。原作の著者チャールズ・ペレグリーノは『キリストの棺』の共著者で、キャメロンはこれに関連する“ドキュメンタリー”のエグゼクティヴ・プロデューサー。

もちろん専門家は『キリストの棺』の主張については懐疑的、というより相手にもされていない感じ。もちろん題材の性格がずいぶん違うので、読みもせずに決めつけるわけにもいかないが……。
