Joint Statement by Japanese netizens objecting to the negative campaign against the movie Nanking and to "Nanking Massacre Denial"

As the information on the movie Nanking (produced by Ted Leonsis, Bill Guttentag et al., directed by Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman) was brought to Japan, some media including the Sankei Shinbun ( a daily newspaper in Japan) prejudicially reported it to be an ”anti-Japan propaganda” film. As a result, the blogs of those concerned ( Mr. Leonsis, a Japanese actor appearing in the movie, etc ) have been filled with vicious comments by denialists of the Nanking Atrocity. In view of this situation, we, people who are interested in war crimes or concerned about the denialist activities on the war crimes of Imperial Japanese armed forces, declare the following:*1

1. Nanking Atrocity or Nanking Massacre is an undeniable historical fact. Although we may hold the right to have different views of the details, scale, causes and so on*2 of the violent acts which occurred in the winter of 1937-1938 in Nanking, our views are in accord on the point that there was an incident that should be described as ”atrocity” or ”massacre.” *3

2. As it is not yet released in Japan at the present moment, we withhold our opinion on Nanking. We, however, wholly deffend the freedom to make a movie like this. In addition, we will welcome its release in Japan to animate discussions on the Nanking Atrocity. We will never approve of the negative campaign, based on denialist inspiration, against this movie.

3. We know that Nanking Incident denialism is supported by neither academic historians nor Japanese Government. We have objected and will continue to object against Nanking Massacre denial within each one’s capacity*4.

映画 Nanking(Ted Leonsis氏、Bill Guttentag氏ほか製作、Bill Guttentag氏、Dan Sturman氏監督)に対して日本では一連のネガティブ・キャンペーンが展開されてきた。

*1:別案:we, being concerned about war crimes in general and/or worried about the activities denying the war crimes of Imperial Japanese armed forces, declare as follows:

Although each of us may hold the right to have one's own view of the details, magnitude, causes and so on of the violent acts comitted during the winter of 1937-1938 in Nanking, we all agree on the point that what should be described as "atrocity" or "massacre" did occur.

*4:別案:as far as each of us can.

the number of victims estimated"かな?
